Firefighter and dad of two Mick Bird, 43, passed away after taking ill while on the way to an
emergency.
Despite being given first aid by his colleagues, he later died in hospital.
Bunches of flowers were left outside Shepshed Fire and Rescue Station to pay tribute to Mick, who
has been saving lives in the area for the past 21 years.
His devastated colleagues in the brigade, both locally and from across the UK, as well as workmates
and friends, have all paid tribute to him.
Station manager at Shepshed Steve Young, who has known Mick ever since he joined the service, said:
Mick was a dedicated family man.
He could always be relied upon in whatever was expected of him.
He was professional but was also a popular guy who had a great sense of humour.
“Mick was respected and admired by his fellow colleagues both at the station and in the brigade.?
Retained firefighter Mick, who was born and bred in Shepshed, leaves behind a wife, Angela and
teenage children Tanya and Danny.
Managing director at Shepshed’s Dunlop Bestobell, where Mick worked and still managed to do
overtime despite his fire service duties, Kay Juss, said: “Mick was a big character. In his
earlier years one of the managers had commented ‘it was like employing Robin Hood - cheeky
chappy.’

Hello Daddy, me and danny have new rooms upstairs now. I guess you've already saw from heaven though. Can you remember that pink McKenzie top that i brought you & you was like im not wearing that, But you did. Well...Danny gave it to me the other day & it brought back so much. I got really upset but i felt close to you. Im not really ready to look at it yet, But i will one day.
Im missing you so much, Each day danny get more and more like you dad. Its quite funny. So Cheeky!

Dad... Our family bird, Joey has just died. He died in Dannys Hands. I feel helpless towards him. I just cry everytime I look at Joey. Its So Sad.
Danny won't put the lid on the tin & just keeps looking at him. He's gone to sit in your Garage to make you help him.
Give him strength Dad.

In life you normaly meet that best special friend at school our in your very early years of life. I meet my life’s best special friend when I was 42 years of age that was Mick, this friendship then only lasted 5 years till he was taken away it always seemed that we had known each other since we was born.
There are no words written to say what a huge hole you have left in my life.
Go bless you Mick you was a great man and any one that really knew you was very proud to of known you.

Christmas Time...
This time of year, When everybodies happy I just can't be. No matter what people say, No matter how many times they say it i can't be happy for you Dad. How can I when your not here. What are people expecting of me?

None of us can still believe this terrible tragedy, it was awful enough when we lost Auntie Maggie and then Uncle Sunny in such a short space of time but then to have you go too was unbelievable!
